Transforming nursing: A series on nursing leadership – Collective leadership

Collective leaders share leadership with other members of the team and while this style has some similarities with compassionate leadership it also has a number of distinct characteristics. The fifth installment of this series explores how the style can benefit staff and teams, as well as patients and organisations, while also considering the difficulties it presents in the complex structures of healthcare.
The leadership styles this series explores are:
- Authentic leadership
- Authoritarian (autocratic) leadership
- Compassionate leadership
- Collective leadership
- Transformational leadership
- Transactional leadership

In 2014, the King's Fund published a seminal piece on collective leadership in health care (West et al, 2014). The authors highlighted that collective leadership is about the sharing of power and responsibility among team members, rather than one ‘leader’ holding this power and position individually. With this shared role and responsibility comes accountability, of course, which is said to be integral to the success of this leadership style (West et al, 2014).
