The Power of Kindness

This is the sixth article of The Positive Psychology Wellbeing Toolkit for Nurses Series

Key points

  • Kindness is a character strength
  • When humans are kind to each other brain waves exhibit the same patterns as sensations linked to reward and pleasure
  • Compassion is greatly valued by those who receive it

This sixth article outlines a range of kindness based interventions that recognises the importance of maintaining staff wellbeing.

The ability to connect amicably as well as handling setbacks helps us to survive in the organisation and develop personal resilience. A way of enhancing this survival is by using kindness interventions that aim to promote altruistic behaviours towards others, while fostering positive emotions in the benefactor.

What is kindness?

The essence of kindness is in doing things for others, for example, carrying out good deeds and delivering caring skills.
